BioMed Central: The Open Access Publisher
In August of 2004, USMAI joined BioMed Central in support of open access publishing. USMAI's institutional membership provides access to BioMed's open access journals for faculty, students and staff as well as a 15% discount on subscriptions to BioMed's fee-based content. In addition, authors based at member institutions receive free article processing; open access to their original research for anyone with Internet access; the probability of increased citations because of wider availablity; inclusion of their research in PubMed; right to retain copyright of their own work; ability to access statistics on how often their work is viewed; and permanent and secure electronic archiving of articles in PubMed Central. For more information on authorship with BioMed Central please see www.biomedcentral.com/info/authors/.
Public Library of Science (PLOS)
Founded in 2000 by Harold Varmus, Patrick Brown and Michael Eisen with the goal of promoting free and open access to scientific knowledge through alternative publishing models, PLOS, a non-profit organization, launched its inaugural journal PLOS Biology in 2003. PLOS is at the forefront of addressing the current issues in scholarly communication facing the scientific and academic communities. PLOS continues to work on open access projects with the recent launch of PLOS Medicine. In support of PLOS, USMAI became an institutional member in 2004. With USMAI membership, faculty receive a 50% discounted publication rate on work submitted to PLOS journals. For more information on the benefits of USMAI membership, please see www.plos.org/support/instmembership.html.
