KEYS TO A SUCCESSFUL ONSITE TRAINING DAY FOR OCLC ILLIAD
We want to make sure that your onsite training session is as useful and informative
as possible. Not surprisingly, we have found that the better prepared a site is before
the trainer arrives, the better the results from the training session. Below is a
checklist to help you prepare for your OCLC ILLiad training session.
Please make sure of the following:
- The computer that will be used for training can relay mail through the SMTP server that
you designated in the Installation Wizard. You may have to consult with the people who
manage your SMTP server to ensure that the proper permissions are in place.
- The Windows user account that will be used for training has the appropriate permissions
to write to the C:\illiad folder.
- The computer that will be used for training has Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat Reader,
and access to the internet via a web browser.
- The monitor on the computer that will be used for training and any projection
equipment are capable of displaying a resolution of 1024 by 768 or higher. It is
important to note that the OCLC ILLiad software will not display correctly at
any resolution less than 1024 by 768.
- The computer that will be used for training has access to a printer. The make or model
of the printer is not critical, as long as it can print Microsoft Word documents.
While it is important to have all of your equipment ready, it is equally important to
have your staff ready for what will be a vital and informative session. The following
are some things to consider as you prepare for your OCLC ILLiad training:
- You may want to have your staff look over the documentation for OCLC ILLiad, which can
be found on our website at http://www.atlas-sys.com/documentation.html. Please make sure
that the staff pays particular attention to the Lending Guide and the ILLiad Lending
Flowchart. They will not need to have a complete understanding of how Lending works in
ILLiad, but an overview will help ensure that they will be ready to process Lending requests
once the training is completed.
- The typical training session is 8 hours with two short breaks and one hour for lunch. You
may want to consider closing your office for the day if possible. During the morning your
trainer will cover the Lending module, including the processing of live Lending requests. In
the afternoon your trainer will review Borrowing, Document Delivery, Reports, and Roll
Out.
- Try to send as many of your staff as you can for as long as you can, including students if
appropriate. Some of the issues covered in Lending apply in Borrowing and vice-versa, so
you might not want to target specific sections for specific staff members.
- Your trainer is at your disposal for the whole day, including lunch. You may want to
arrange a group lunch in advance, so that you can ask questions that might not come up in
the normal course of training.
