About the committee (Updated 09/24/08)

The Cataloging Policy Committee (CPC) was established by the Council of Library Directors in the Dec. 16, 2004 meeting.

Charge

The Committee is charged with recommending priorities and courses of action, and with formulating policies for the functional areas under its purview. Members should also respond to requests from CLD for research, priorities and initiatives and from ITD for feedback or testing. The Committee will also respond to requests for changes to Aleph validation tables, indexes and bibliographic loaders from member libraries and determine if there are system-wide implications. For specific tasks refer to the annual work plan.

Scope

CPC formulates cataloging policy which affects the consortium. It advises on specification for batch loaded records into consortially developed databases such as the USMAI catalog and ResearchPort and on relevant national and international standards; organizes, documents, and communicates cataloging policy decisions; oversees and coordinates creation of procedural documentation; provides forums for staff to discuss and resolve issues related to cataloging, MARC coding, authority control, metadata and crosswalking between formats; and makes provisions for the training of USMAI library staff responsible for cataloging.

Membership

Membership in CPC will be by application to the CLD chair.  The group should have a minimum of 6-8 members with expertise in the functional areas, i.e. cataloging, serials, and/or acquisitions. Membership should be staggered in order to create continuity.  One member must be from College Park and one member must serve as a liaison to the ERIC2 Task Group.  Overall membership should reflect the diversity of institutions within the USMAI.

Task Groups are encouraged to use a co-chair arrangement and to be sure that there is representation from the task group on any sub-group that is formed.  Sub-groups members may be selected by the task group in consultation with the CLD chair (no applications necessary).  All task groups will have a liaison in ITD who will attend meetings as needed.
