Minutes DRAFT
Present: W. Bass, M. Gilbert, J. Phillips, C. Rabinowitz, L. Seguin (facilitating), M. Vikor (recording), L. Wrubel
Approved minutes for November & December, which have been up on the site in draft form.
Group members discussed the draft application to CLD for task group renewal. Some of the important next steps for ERIC2, such as work on the “SFX loader” and further URL cleanup, are on hold, due to ALEPH v.18 upgrade. However, other matters could be addressed without impacting ITD resources, such as coordinating details of additional e-book record set loads to the catalog, making adjustments to the catalog Find It button to facilitate e-book access, and accommodating unaffiliated users’ access to free e-resources.
Action item: In April, most ERIC members will be involved in ALEPH expert testing of v.18 functionality and should keep an eye on issues related to e-resources in the v.18 catalog.
Action item: Linda will revise and send the application for task group extension to CLD.
Conference call took place with Serials Solutions representatives, Allison Feist, Peter McCracken and Louis Sooklal, regarding their MARC record service. Responses to Task Group questions revealed that Serials Solutions’ service is oriented to supporting linking to the titles rather than simply providing the bibliographic records matching our institutions’ subscriptions. They provide a variety of sources and options for supplying records from the CONSER database, as well as in-house catalogers (SS is a CONSER affiliate member permitted to modify CONSER records), Australian national library, NLM, and other outside catalogers contracted for special categories, such as Russian-language serials. In monthly updates, they can provide changed records and upgraded records (non-CONSER to CONSER bibs) and can customize records to suit special needs. They accept customers’ files of titles as CSV file or Excel spreadsheet with title and a single ISSN, and could probably accept a single file from USMAI or 16 separate files. The Task Group members clarified with them that we want only bib records (not a linking service). McCracken seemed certain that their processes could support what we want. but since Serials Solutions has never provided a customer only bib records, they weren't sure how to price it for USMAI. After some consideration, Sooklal will contact Betty.
Action item: USMAI needs to investigate whether any problem is presented by sending the SFX KB object id to vendors for inclusion in bib records supplied by a MARC record service. ERIC2 has planned to use the SFX KB object id as a match point by the “SFX” loader.
Next meeting of ERIC2 will be May 8th starting at 10am. Linda will confirm the location.
