• Exploration of e-book access options using current technology
  In advance of the meeting, Laura distributed a table she prepared of catalog linking options using SFX— “Linking to E-Books through Find It” (see below). For the meeting, she demonstrated the SFX work for the various categories of options. The following are examples of different problems encountered or observations made:
  
  • Many netLibrary entries are in SFX KB by ISBN only—no title entry (object=1000000000107330 with only isbn=1-4175-7398-8 is title in catalog=The modern Middle East) Of 4979 active netLibrary titles in the CP KB, only 356 have titles
    
    
  • Gale Virtual Reference Library—all USMAI institutions got the same set of “free” titles with a purchased title; SFX links from the catalog to the vendor title list page, rather than the individual title
    
    {LW later reported she ”created a new target parser that will link to the title level rather than the top page. This means that if you click on the GVRL link in the SFX menu from the catalog you will go straight to that book in GVRL. I think Ex Libris will probably catch up at some point, but until then we can use this custom parser.
    
    The new target parser also can handle the few books where the ISBN that SFX uses is different from the one needed to link into GVRL. This works only in cases where both already exist in the KB.”}
    
    
  • (GVRL) Encyclopaedia Judaica—SFX KB title entry was “Encyclopedia Judaica, 2nd ed.” and only exact match is tolerated on title search of KB; Find It link from RP goes to title screen for resource; once title entry corrected and activated in KB, Find It menu from catalog goes to vendor title list page {later corrected with custom target parser}. Of CP’s 12 GVRL titles, only one has a separate entry in the Research Port A-Z list; the rest are accessed via the GVRL or netLibrary entries.
    
    SFX parser from print catalog record for Encyclopaedia Judaica uses title match to make the SFX link work because 1st isbn in bib is for the set and is not in KB. SFX parsing of the bib considers bib elements in the following order:
    First ISSN
    First ISBN
    Title $$a {exact match}
    Publication information
    
    If we should ever add SFX KB Object IDs to the bibs and adjust the parser, the Object Ids will be the first element that the parser uses to link to SFX.
    
    
  • (GVRL) Encyclopedia of world biography—GVRL objects not yet active (KB has two for this title—one for v.24 and one for v.1-23) but netLibrary object was; SFX & bib url link for netLibrary connected to an entirely different non-GVRL title, which Laura debugged and corrected so that netLibrary link connects to correct resource. She will investigate giving de-bugging functionality to read-only access for SFX KB admin; this would be for identification of the problem for resolution by ITD.
    
    
  • Loader specifications for large e-resource sets should cover SFX treatment—is resource in SFX KB? Is resource in multiple USMAI SFX instances, i.e., does any other campus have access to the same resources?
    
    
  • Use of $$7 with 2-letter "ownership" of 856/956 could support selective display of institutional URLs from the bib in the SFX menu when institutional access differs.
    
    
  • Local objects to SFX KB can be added by title but not by ISBN
    
    
  • How to insure that local objects for the same resource added to multiple KBs have the same Object ID assigned?
    
    
  • Potential of Citation Linker as E-Book finder; Saint Mary’s has a book tab
    
    
  • Proxying with local URL— how to make this work?
  
  
  
• Planning for Oct. e-book meeting
  Team members discussed requesting brief statements from TG chairs about what role they see their TGs playing regarding ebooks. Statements could be shared via email or at the October meeting.
