Minutes of the ERIC2 meeting
Nov. 13, 2007, 1-3 PM
McKeldin Library
Present: Betty Day, Mary Gilbert, Gordana Ruth, Linda Seguin (recorder), Marlene Vikor, Laura Wrubel
Status of the SFX loader
- Seguin suggested that ERIC2 make sure that it has completed all of the parts of the specification that it can, perhaps using the CPC loader request form. The SFX loader subgroup (Vikor, Seguin, Ruth) will revisit this.
- Vikor pointed out that the SFX loader is unlike any loader USMAI has had before, not only because of the complex matching algorithm, but also because it will be expected to remove Items, HOLs and BIBs on an ongoing basis.
- Some items that need to be included in the spec:
- insertion of the SFX object ID number in the BIB record
- creation of HOLs and Items
- The work of the Serial Record Study Group could impact the loader. It would certainly be easier to write the loader if the records were cleaned up first.
- Action item: Seguin will ask for a status report from ITD-Aleph on the SFX loader.
Annual report / Goals for next year
- Seguin reported that the Task Group chairs have been encouraged to submit annual reports and annual goals rather than concentrating on applications for renewal.
- If ERIC2 does continue in 2008, membership should be considered. Rabinowitz wishes to step down at the end of 2007. The group should request that CLD put out a call for applications from the public services sector to replace her. Other members should also think about whether or not they wish to continue their membership. Day wishes to step down as co-chair at the end of the year.
- Action item: Seguin will put drafts on the wiki.
- Some items to include on the annual report:
- E-book forum
- Interviews with MARC record vendors – hopefully even have a recommendation prepared by the end of the year
- Some goals for next year
- Set up a cross TG process/communication model for e-books, taking into consideration other formats such as streaming video and audiobooks
- SFX loader – specified, tested and in production
Follow up on 856/956 $7 workaround
- The set up in Test was shared with COIcatdbmaint for testing. Some problems were found and resolved, but there were no objections to the idea.
- Action item: Seguin will send message to COIall
- Explain what is coming up
- Explain that some legacy 856 $7s may exist in the catalog; if URLs show up on the Find It menu in error, then they can be fixed by the local database maintenance person
- Action item: Wrubel will set up 856/956 $7 in Live (this will take some time).
- Action item: Wrubel will revise the Linking document
- Prefer the 856/956 $7 method
- Add the 020 9 workaround for e-books
- Ask to have it linked on the CPC web site
Next steps on MARC records for e-journals
- The group discussed the fact that a move to WorldCat Local could certainly have an impact on the MARC record issue and all of the work of ERIC2
- OCLC E-Serials Holdings Service
- Action Item: Day will consult with OCLC representative on 11/15/07 about whether or not this service is available to SFX customers
- We were unable to set up a call with TD Net for this meeting.
- Action Item: Day will try to set up a conference call with TD Net, Vikor and Wrubel before the next ERIC2 meeting.
- Next meeting the group should agree on a recommendation on MARC record services. A volunteer will be needed to draft the message to CLD.
Next meeting: Dec. 11, 2007, 1-3 PM
Location: UMBC Tech Center (tentative)
