University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions
ERIC II Task Group
April 8, 2005
Topic: Introductions
Betty and Jean will chair the group
Charge:
We reviewed the Charge from CLD including the list of Phase I tasks for the group embedded in the ERIC White Paper.
sfx update:
All 16 institutions have updated their holdings in the sfx KnowledgeBase.
V. 3 has been installed in test. Laura distributed a sample of the new menu structure, where you can show primary services and then have the user click to see more services. USMERC and an ad hoc Screen Design Group are working on tailoring the screens to our needs.
There is already a procedure for loading updates from Ex Libris to the sfx Knowledge Base and then extracting that information and loading it into ResearchPort.
Ex Libris has implemented Open Url 1.0 with v. 3, which has the ability to link to resources beyond e-journals and e-books, such as patents and dissertations. The publishers need to implement this standard at their end.
Betty distributed a URL for a list of the current content available in the KnowledgeBase (http://www.sfxit.com).
Titles on sfx website are coded to show level of linking possible.
During this discussion the question of URLs in the Reserves OPAC which link to individual articles was raised, the group decided that those were not in the scope of the charge.
How to proceed:
A reflector (eric@itd.umd.edu) has been established with members of the Task Group and some additional ITD staff members. Members should use this list for communication.
It was decided to try splitting into two groups: one focusing on user interface issues and one focusing on database loading and maintenance. In our next meeting we will have two separate meetings. Any group member can come to both if they like, or just attend the one in their area of specialty.
We are charged to communicate our work with the wider USMAI community through a web site, published minutes, emails engaging the COIs, USMERC and campus contacts and open forums.
Training: one area members felt they could benefit from some training was in the backend support of sfx. How is updating the KnowledgeBase done? Laura will provide some information in our next meeting.
Marlene is our liaison to the newly formed Cataloging Policy Committee. The former version of this committee was very helpful to the first ERIC Task Force, their reports are available on the first ERIC website at: http://www.itd.umd.edu/eric
Our next meetings are scheduled for April 29th, with the User Interface meeting from 10:30-12 and the Database meeting from 12-2. We also scheduled a full meeting for 5/17, from 10-12.
