ERIC II Task Group
August 9, 2005
Meeting Minutes
Present: Marlene Vikor, Celia Rabinowitz, Bill Sleeman, Jean Phillips, Susanna van Sant, Laura Wrubel, Mary Gilbert, Linda Seguin, Ben Wahlberg, David Kennedy, Wilma Bass (minutes)
Meeting convened at 9:00 am at CP
1. Jean reminded the group of our next meeting date and location:
- September 13, 9:00am-Noon, Room 7113, McKeldin
2. Load of NetLibrary e-book records
ITD proposal:
- delete all existing NetLibrary records, matching on "NL" in 035
- leave the 856 supplied in the bib record
- Add 950 indicating NetLibrary load
- Campuses provided Holding code
Discussion: using the supplied URL will not provided off campus access
- When SFX is available in catalog and NetLibrary titles in KB, the titles will be available off campus. The KB is updated monthly by EL. No assurance of when your requested information will be added to KB.
- Stats are available from NetLibrary based on IP
- Will everyone want everything? TG proposal for everyone to get everything. ITD will provide a list of all titles by call number, for individual deletion of holdings
ITD will investigate: global holding linked to each campus
Action items:
- Laura will pursue getting new file of NetLibrary records
- ITD will redo the specs for load
- Records will be loaded to Test DB - available for viewing, evaluation
Addition to minutes from e-mail message from Laura Wrubel August 11, 2005:
NetLibrary let me know yesterday that they think the files will be ready for
us early next week. In addition to College Park, UMUC also has Tier 3 books
(books that only they have access to). These were not part of Tier 2
because the publishers of these particular books don't permit them to be
shared consortially.
3. Changes to loader
Ben and Zarzar working on new loader
- Old loader read each record and then went through each campus
- New loader will read in 1 record and process multiple campus holdings and items and can handle multiple matches. Merging records is a separate process. Possibility for Aleph record deletion.
4. Turning on SFX in the Catalog
Dave provided hand out and demo of various options for signing in. Everyone very impressed and excited
Should other services be added to the SFX menu?
ITD recommends a soft release by end of fall semester
Action items:
- announce availability in Test DB to circ and interface
- Celia will work on wording of SFX menu options
suggestions: reorder options to:
- Item available
- Request (hold)
- ILL
- when item cannot be requested, add link and note to catalog screen
Laura(?) will work on wording
- Add to top of SFX menu, if not in SFX KB, "No full text available via FindIt"
- Usability testing - Laura, Mary, Heidi and UM Law (possible)
Addition to minutes from Bill Sleeman August 12, 2005
Staff person at UM Law unable to assist due to work obligations.
- Dave will investigate adding FindIt button to holdings screen
- Betty and Laura will contact Syndetic re: pricing and demo
5. Keeping the catalog up-to-date
Option:
- Union view no longer an option, too many changes involved for ITD to handle, does not work with our holding format
- Single record - how do we get there?
Recommendation
- Single record has to be sold to everyone
- Explore MarcIt
- Examine new loader specs
- Must present to CLD
- include previous objections
- mock up of what a record could look like
- importance of unified effort
- no exceptions, think of work arounds
Action items:
- Laura will ask EL for sample file of MarcIt records and will investigate pricing
- Linda, Marlene and Wilma will work on example of display and how the merge could be accomplished
Meeting adjourned at 11:15am
