Still working on getting records for Tier 3
Jean Phillips working on loader specs
Dave Kennedy will work our url that will be in record
2. Turning on SFX in the catalog (Laura Wrubel)
Laura Wrubel reported on the Usability Subgroup's progress:
Usability Subgroup, consisting of representatives from User Interface Task Group and ERIC, devised a set of tasks to ask students and faculty to perform using find it button in the Test DB
Usability study will be conducted at UMCP with students and at TU with faculty during the last week of October
Goal: to bring to the November 8th meeting results of the test
Timeline for SFX in the catalog
Complete usability testing by end of October
Devote November meeting to discussion of the usability test
Conduct follow up usability tests in December
December meeting plan for open forum in January
January hold open forum on SFX in the catalog
Spring semester, soft release of SFX in the catalog
Committee had a general discussion about multiple holdings display, screen design, and the find it button. Looked at Melvyl libraries catalog, where holdings are in chart format at bottom of screen. Committee members agreed that a major screen redesign wasn't possible before bringing up SFX in the catalog, but thought SFX might be a catalyst for change with the catalog's screens.
3. Other services on the SFX menu (Betty Day)
Betty Day reported on Syndetics and Amazon
Syndetics is a Bowker company
Betty has an appointment with Bowker, when she will discuss service pricing models, working with open urls, using Syndetics with SFX, and setting up a trial
Betty will also investigate using Amazon; e.g. some libraries get book jackets from them for their catalogs
4. Keeping the catalog up-to-date (Marlene Vikor, Linda Seguin)
Linda passed out a paper prepared by the One Record Subgroup on options for 1 full bibliographic serial record with holdings attached for all formats
Because of the complexity, Group had difficulty designing a loader and the specifications for a match
Marlene noted one option was to create a generic record using MarcIt
Questions and observations:
→ MarcIt is 95% print
→ What if nobody owns the print; how do we justify World Cat holdings?
→ Potential problems with ILL
→ Who would dedup?
Betty will set up a small test file for SFX and clarify pricing with MarcIt
Jean, Betty and Heidi will attend the next One Record Subgroup meeting to brainstorm about the single record
5. Communication (Jean Phillips)
Discussed additions to website for ERIC II Task Group:
Minutes
First ERIC forum

Campus Contacts noted that minutes are for the members; what they need is a status report
