February 14, 2006
Meeting Minutes
Present: Betty Day (co-chair), Jean Phillips (co-chair), Mary Gilbert, Heidi Hanson, Linda Seguin, Ted Kruse, Laura Wrubel, Marlene Vikor, Celia Rabinowitz (minutes)
Meeting began at 10:00am
1. Review of agenda:
Added NetLibrary record load to Topic 4: Next Steps
2. Review of Feedback:
Laura presented the feedback she received from librarians from the test and live versions of Find it in the catalog. Comments fell in these categories:
- Link to Availability: summary holdings not appearing, including holdings in Find it menu, etc.
- Existing URLs: known problems
- Full-text links in menu: include link only when full text is available
- Linking to current title: known problems
- Multiple records: known problems
- Customization requests: consortial consistency issue
- Find It button presentation: user interface design
- Request/ILL: resource sharing issues
- Catalog screens: user interface issues
- Authentication: focus on version 18
There was a discussion of what to do next with this list. There is a clear need to send some issues along to other task groups to address and also to collaborate with some groups on researching and implementing modifications.
ACTION:
- Laura will integrate comments from the forum and from usability testing with these and rework the list which will be posted on the web.
- Celia will forward to ERIC II a draft document that outlines our response. ERIC members are asked to provide feedback and suggestions for changes by the end of the day on February 20th.
3. Book Review Targets and Syndetics
Book Review Index, Books in Print Plus, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble are now all working links in the Find it menu for those campuses who have access and want them (all campuses have access to Amazon and Barnes & Noble).
The committee discussed Syndetics. We focused on access to Choice and LJ reviews, cover images, and summaries.- Betty outlined three possible options:
- Make a recommendation now
- Postpone a recommendation indefinitely
- Request that the vendor do a demo with wide participation
ACTION
- Betty will bring discussion to the eCollections Task Group for input and to draft a justification
- Betty will talk to Tom about impact on the central site budget
- ITD will take a look at the technical issues of adding cover images to the catalog
- Betty will look at the possibility of getting usage stats or getting user feedback
4. Next Steps
(a) Jean outlined items from the forum and other feedback includes:
- Usability testing
- Cleanup or URLs
- Sfx load
- One vs. multiple record problem
- NetLibrary records
- Limiting or modifying Find it by format
- Display of URLs in the Find it menu
- Full text display only when it is available
- Correct titles
- Multiple records
- Sfx load and MARCIt
(b) Jean distributed proposed specs for the NetLibrary load that Marlene, Linda, and Wilma worked on. Marlene reported that this loads access for all 16 campuses to many records. It hides holdings and items (no display). Item reports can be run and notes will be used to refer users to Find it for access. There was some discussion of how best to indicate access to users.
ACTION
- Heidi will set up the collection code for NetLibrary (NLWWW), Jean will set up the IPS, and will create a mock up or test records in the catalog for the next meeting.
- Betty will bring this topic to the eCollections Task Group and ask them to begin creating a list of other ebook collections that will need to be loaded eventually.
There is no specific timeline for this.
(c) URLs: Bill created a report pre-stp on URLS in the catalog. We need to assess what data we have and how up-to-date it is. It was decided it might make more sense to focus on the sfx load before considering deleting URLs.
ACTION
- Marlene, Linda, Wilma, and Ben will try to meet before the next ERIC meeting to formulate a RX for a report that will retrieve a good sample of existing URLs which can be assessed.
- Laura will work on limiting Find it by format (the possibility of showing different menus depending on whether the item is a serial or monograph), the possibility of putting the URL into the Find it menu, and the possibility of limiting Find it by full-text availability. She will place examples in test.
5. ELUNA
The committee discussed submitting a proposal for the June, 2006, ELUNA conference in Knoxville. This proposal would focus on the work ERIC I and II have done and as many as 3-5 committee members might possible present.
ACTION
- Marlene and Laura will work on a proposal (due by February 17)
- Betty and Jean will ask Barbara Gontrum about participation and funding
