ERIC II Task Group
March 14, 2007
UMBC
Present: Heidi Hanson, Ted Kruse (recording), Jean Phillips, Celia Rabinowitz, Linda Seguin, Marlene Vikor, Laura Wrubel
- Review of Task Group charge:
- Implement SFX in the catalog. -- Complete
- Re-evaluate catalog screens to improve displays for e-resources. – Partially completed. Other parts referred to User Interface group
- Work on a solution to the duplicate record/holding issue. There is a clear consensus that a virtual merge of the display is highly preferable. – The virtual merge as in vision by ERIC I had feasibility issues. ITD lacks good tools to merge duplicate records. This issue will be investigated further after the more electronic books and serials are in the catalog.
- Tailor the FindIt menus to relate better to resources and services available in the catalog. -- Investigating if material type, in this case video, can be used to trigger a different FindIt menu. Better links in the Reserve Module needs investigation.
- Perform usability testing on proposed changes to the catalog interface.-- Conducted several usability studies. Usability testing will be ongoing to test future catalog configurations.
- Determine the best means to obtain, load, and maintain bibliographic records for all resources represented in the SFX knowledge base, beginning with e-journals and e-books. This task includes exploring tools available from Ex Libris and other vendors for accomplishing this work.- – Have nearly completed specs on the NetLibrary loader. This spec will be circulated to other USMAI groups for review. Other projects could be: add short record in the catalog for SFX electronic journals, add local digital collections into the catalog, and links to course management software such as Blackboard and Webtyco.
- Evaluate the state of URLs in catalog for materials not represented in the SFX knowledge base, identify and evaluate the potential of outside sources against which to verify and update URLs (possible sources are WorldCat and Ulrich's online), and propose any remedies. -– Have gathered information about the URLs in the catalog and are analyzing. Duplicate and dead URL’s seem to be the main issues.
- Review changes in the SFX Knowledge Base and other technological developments, such as the expanding use of the open URL, and propose any relevant implementations.
- Determine the charge and logistics for Phase II. – Investigate linking streaming video from Digitool to the catalog.
- NetLibrary loader
Marlene’s draft spec was accepted with a Public Note to be added to the records, probably 876 $z. We will ask new NetLibrary campuses if they want NetLibrary holdings set in OCLC. Want all campuses to adopt the same holdings code for NLWWW. The next step will be to create a record mockup and send specs to other appropriate USMAI groups.
- Eluna proposal.
The proposal was accepted for presentation at the Knoxville meeting.
- ERIC Form feedback
Laura’s spreadsheet captured and categorized the feedback received. Some issues have been sent to other groups. We discussed posting the ERIC forum feedback on the ERIC website and perhaps creating a Wiki for future feedback.
- Next Meeting, April 18 at College Park.
