Meeting Minutes
December 7, 2006
College Park
Members Present:Wilma Bass (recording), Betty Day, Heidi Hanson, Ted Kruse, Jean Phillips, Celia Rabinowitz, Linda Seguin, Marlene Vikor, Laura Wrubel
Nettie Lagace, Carol, and Amit Marcus called to discuss the MarcIt service and SFX
Explanation of new EL process for SFX KB: The KB is populated by data feeds from providers (Ovid, Ebsco, Elsevier, etc.). When a journal has a title change, access is provided on the new title, although availability will include the previous title. ExLibris is enhancing their CONSER loader tools to include 780/785 (previous and later title relationships) in the SFX object table, creating relationships between these entries. This process should help resolve URL relationships between a title and subsequent titles.
M. Vikor asked question related to title changes keeping the same ISSN. Only if there is a new ISSN will the KB create a new object. If the ISSN remains the same, an abbreviate title tag is added. The TG has some concerns with this process.
EL is renewing efforts with journal package providers, eg, OVID, to have them provide accurate and timely updates.
OCLC eSerials Holdings Service: EL customers will be able to have their holdings added to WorldCat by mid-January
USMAI single record approach: L. Seguin described our single record approach to cataloging serials; we use the print record if we have print and online access, the online record is used if there is no print access. EL and Harvard are developing documentation on the single-record approach to cataloging with MARCIt. ERIC is interested in seeing these documents. Carol provided a brief description of how Minnesota implemented MARCIt.
CONSER Database: EL receives weekly updates of CONSER file; customer can decide frequency of update; presently, no cost associated with update. If the KB contains an ISSN, there is a +90% match on the CONSER DB.
MarkIt Process: looks for ISSN, eISSN, title; candidate selected, each field is weighted, preferred record has highest score. Site can choose an algorithm that weighs print against e.
Pricing B. Day will discuss with Chris. Fee is based on FTE, not titles.
ACTION ITEMSJ. Phillips reported on progress of loaders subgroup
ACTION ITEM: L. Seguin will provide sample records that retrieve the Multiple Object Menu because they lack 022 $a to test topic.
Members were unclear of delineation of tasks: Netlibrary Record Load to Aleph is listed under Cataloging and DB Management, although ERIC was responsible for activity. ERIC initiates much of the work done by other groups with ITD inuput.
The term of the TG expires Feb., 2007. B. Day and L. Seguin will request to have ERIC TG put on the agenda to request renewing the committee and its membership.
ACTION ITEM: J. Phillips will send RX: Workplan Update adding
to be added to the USMAI Workplan as E-Resources Management activities.
Next meeting: Monday, January 8, UMBC Tech Center, 9AM-noon
Tentative agenda: conference call with TDNet and Serials Solutions at 9:15 and 10:30.
Meeting adjourned at 12:10 pm.
