ERIC2 Task Group Meeting
Jan. 25, 2008, 10:00-12:00
McKeldin Library Room 6103
Present: Betty Day, Mary Gilbert, Heidi Hanson, Susan Herrick, Ted Kruse, Gordana Ruth, Linda Seguin (recorder), Marlene Vikor, Laura Wrubel
The agenda was rearranged to accommodate a member who had to leave early.
- Finalize 2008 meeting schedule
- The group will meet the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.
- Meetings will alternate between McKeldin Library and the UMBC Tech Center.
- See wiki for schedule
- TDnet report/MARC record sets
- Day, Vikor, and Wrubel had a conference call with TDnet representatives in December. Day followed up at ALA Midwinter Meeting in January.
- TDnet reports a 90% fill rate for full MARC records, consisting of CONSER and publisher data. They have been told that they have a comprehensive knowledge base that is particularly good with aggregators. Every record in their knowledge base has an ISSN, e-ISSN, and other match points. They also have records for 600,000 e-books with ISBNs and e-ISBNs. Vikor said that she would be interested in knowing which e-book packages they cover.
- They receive data in the form of Excel spreadsheets.
- They can accommodate a single record for all formats of a title, and the records are customizable. Vikor pointed out that all vendors said that they could accommodate single or separate record approaches, but how they do it can differ. With record customizations, what they give us and what we load can be two different things.
- The pricing model is a per record subscription. This varies from other vendors to which ERIC2 has spoken. There is a discount if the Table of Contents service is also purchased.
- TDnet representatives were interested in selling USMAI their whole line of products and are interested in a "partnership" with USMAI.
- ERIC2 members at the meeting wanted some additional information:
- A description of the process and how they handle non-matches.
- What size sample can we submit to them?
- We are waiting for the names of some of their SFX customers.
- Next steps on MARC records
- Day has started a draft grid to compare the 4 MARC record vendors. She will post it on the wiki, for other members to help fill in.
- Follow up with EbscoNet - they were going to let us look at their administrative interface.
- Day will ask Ex Libris if MARCit handles e-books and will get an updated price quote.
- Send samples to all of the vendors, making sure to include objects without standard numbers, and problematic targets, such as Lexis-Nexis. If they will let us send data for one whole instance (CP), we could see the overall match rate and examine a smaller sample of record (~1000). We would be interested to know the number of matches vs. non-matches and also to look at some of the records provided for both cases. Ruth and Seguin agreed to look at the sample records, possibly recruiting help from others.
- Wrubel asked if our intent is to send all of the records from the KB or only the ones that do not match an existing record in catalogusmai. The answer to that may differ, depending on whether the price is per record or FTE.
- Another consideration is whether to subscribe on a continuing basis or only for the first year, to get the bulk of the records, and then maintain the database ourselves.
- We should also consider access to e-resources via WorldCat local. OCLC's e-serials holdings service would be helpful there.
- Welcome to new member, Susan Herrick of UM Law
- The members of the group introduced themselves and described some of the work that ERIC2 has done.
- 2008 Work Plan
- The group continued work on the draft work plan due at the end of the month.
- A subgroup was formed to work on the e-book workflows: Day, Gilbert, Herrick.
- Vikor expressed a desire to look at SFX usage statistics from the catalog. Wrubel will assist with this.
- Select new co-chair
- The group decided to continue with a single chair.
