User Interface Task Group
Minutes of March 4, 2008

Minutes of the February meeting are temporarily unavailable.

Two news items were added to the agenda.

A script for the next round of Researchport usability testing has been posted on the wiki. My Lists was not explored last time so that portion and the changes that have been made in reaction to previous feedback will be tested. The testing process consists of pre-questions, tasks, guided questions to have the testers focus on My Lists and post questions. It was suggested that a question on searching a saved set of databases be added to the guided questions. Testing is planned for late March or early April.

We discussed putting access restrictions in the database information button. Laura has created a test for Academic Search Premier showing number of simultaneous users allowed. What other kind of information would we want to display? Lenore observed that she has seen a trend of vendors requiring licensees to provide terms and conditions to users. Some libraries have databases that require plug-ins for use.

Laura has also been working on adding licenses information to the SFX menu and showed us a mockup. She does not yet have the actual text of the consortial licenses, but is working with ERM to get that. We agreed that the mockup needs re-working to ensure that users see the links and understand the purpose. The issue of our being legally obligated to show terms and conditions will be discussed with ECOLL and ERM.

Feedback forms for CatalogUSMAI and Researchport were discussed. We liked Laura's branding. Issues of having automatic subject lines as well as the ability to allow the user to supply an additional subject, what to call the link (Report a problem was favored) and trying to grab the page from which the feedback link was clicked were discussed. We like asking for a campus affiliation. Laura and Heidi will work to make the forms as similar as possible. There are no mandatory fields in the forms.

Beta has been removed from the New Titles base. Heidi has not yet completed her work with preferences.

We discussed the next steps for ERIC2's proposal to revise the wording of URL notes. We are ready to send a request for approval to the user interface COI. Linda and Cindy will post a draft statement on the wiki. Linda will create an example and verify that the language is consistent with notes in other CPC guidelines. There was a discussion of the technical process for implementing this change once it is approved. It will become standard practice for new records. UITG is uncertain of the feasibility of retrospective application to current records.

In 2007, the Special Collections Cataloging Team belonging to the Special Collections Collaborative studied the Society of American Archivists standard Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) in order to make UM Libraries' records compatible. Now that the standard has been implemented at UM Libraries, the Team would like to improve Aleph label texts which currently have the generic label "notes" so users can more easily navigate the bibliographic information. Cindy will distribute the proposal electronically. The team was told that implementation would not be an undue burden on ITD, but Heidi needs to look at the proposal to see if the labels fit into space restrictions These labels would appear on all records.

The White Paper from the Web Study Group will be discussed at the CLD retreat and the next meeting. It will also be added to our agenda for the April meeting.

At this time the general catalog feedback only goes to ITD. We agreed to continue having it go to the ILS team, but would like to know about repeating issues that we can address.

Heidi asked for confirmation that the unimplemented version 18 features of renew all and renew selected should be given priority. She will start working on this.

The comments forms will be in test before our April meeting.
