Meeting Minutes for the User Interface Task Group
April 1, 2008: 10:00-11:30
McKeldin Rm 6103

Notetaker: Laura

Present:Lenore England, Janet Evander, Heidi Hanson, Sean Henry, Linda Seguin, Tierney Lyons, Susan Wheeler, Laura Wrubel

1) Topic: Renew all/renew selected
Work on this new feature is still in progress. Heidi and Linda will bring this to the May meeting. Other recent work on the catalog included taking the beta message off the New Titles Catalog and changes to the full view of records as a results of reindexing. Some headings needed to be "deindexed" and hidden from display. Work on removing serials from the new titles catalog is in progress.

2) Topic: Feedback forms
Janet reported a problem with not receiving an email from the "Report a problem with Research Port" test form. Laura will look into it. Pending fixing any delivery problems, UITG thought the form itself was ready to be released. When it's ready to go, Laura will send a message out to the consortium. Sean Henry will set up a "known problems in Research Port" page for the wiki.

Heidi is continuing work on the form in the Catalog.

3) Topic: Terms and conditions display in Find It
Laura showed work so far on this. She is finishing work on the functionality and working with Joyce Garczynski, Betty Day's GA, to make the interpreted licenses available. There are a few of these done by the ERM Task Group. The bulk of the work in this project is the creation of the license terms documents.

Laura is working on getting data into MetaLib to support the "i" button display of access restrictions. She's starting with information about simultaneous users for consortial databases.

4) Topic: Draft proposal to improve note labels in bibliographic records
UITG had already agreed that these label changes made sense and Heidi has implemented them in test Aleph. The group came close to finalizing the text of a message to go out to COIall requesting comment on the changes. Susan will send the message out and comments will be due by April 11, 2008.

5) Topic: Next steps for Rx 2149-- Item renewal language in My Account.
UITG reviewed the suggested wording for messaging about denied renewals. Members should send any other suggestions about wording via the Rx.

Janet proposed improved wording for the Holds/Requests status page. Feedback from users has been that the "In Process" statement on the status page leads them to expect frequent updates and more information about their request. The suggestion was to add an asterisk after "in Process" and the note "* You will be notified when the item is available for pickup". This matches messaging on other screens. Heidi will try implementing this in test and review other statuses that may also need the additional information.

Heidi will soon be able to release the work on the Preferences screen into live.

6) Topic: Periodic review of progress on error messages.
The wiki page on confusing catalog and Research Port error message is not being regularly reviewed and maintained. Susan will move completed items to the bottom. She'll prepare a review of the remaining suggestions as a topic for the next UITG meeting.

7) Topic: Report of Web Presence Study Group
UITG gave Laura suggestions of additional criteria to bring back to the study group. They have been charged by CLD to create a list of criteria, based on the features list in the white paper, to be used by a future group in evaluating discovery tools. UITG had questions about the integration of future tools with existing services.

8) Topic: Approval of minutes
Minutes of the March meeting were approved, with minor language changes to the topic on the Research Port "i" button. Susan will send them to Laura Arnhold for posting on the USMAI site.

Next meeting: May 6, 10-:00-12:00, McKeldin Library
