Serials Record Study Group (SRSG)
Subgroup of Acquisitions Serials Task Group
September 21, 2007 (Introductory Meeting)
Bowie State University, 10a.m.

Members: Pamela Bluh (chair), Yalan Qi, Kat Ryner, Joyce Tenney, Marlene Vikor

This subgroup was established by the Council of Library Directors (CLD). The charge of the subgroup is to provide the Council of Library Directors with a brief overview of the issues surrounding the topic of consolidation of serial records; to offer possible solutions and make recommendations based on what is practical, cost-effective and will be beneficial to users. The report is due to CLD no later than February 1, 2008.

  1. It was agreed that Pamela Bluh would chair the group. After discussion of the issues involved and possible ways to present the report, it was agreed that the report would describe the current situation, report a range of options for addressing the problem and offer recommendations for resolving the problem.

  2. The first task of the group will be to gather information, both statistical and anecdotal on the current status of serials records within the USMAI. This information will form the section of the report dealing with the current situation within the USMAI.

  3. Reports that were prepared earlier for other groups that documented the number of SSNs that had multiple bibliographic records in the system will be reviewed. If updated reports are needed to assist in this review, Yalan will arrange for reports to be run as necessary. Another report that compared the SFX ISSN data against the catalog to detail duplicate bibliographic records will be reviewed by Marlene. She will report back to the SRSG by October 15. Marlene will also do a brief report on what lead to the decision for USMAI to go to a single record approach for serials.

  4. Kat will query the COI for the User Interface Task Group for anecdotal information on the impact on users. She will report back to the SRSG by October 15.

  5. It was agreed that information should be gathered on what other groups within USMAI are doing now to address this issue. Feedback will be requested from CPC, ERIC II, and other groups. Some of these issues are on the ITD Workplan, such as refining the SFX loader to identify the record of choice from multiple options. It was agreed to query interested groups for their input and concerns.

  6. Yalan will set up a list for the SRSG (srsg@itd.umd.edu), and she will set up a Web presence for the SRSG under the ASTG. In order to minimize the number of face to face meetings, the group will schedule a conference call the week of October 22 to review the background material and develop next steps.
